Former Ranger Vinny Prospal has signed with the Columbus Blue Jackets according to GM Scott Howson.
Prospal, age 36, recorded 23 points in 29 games played with the Rangers last season. Knee surgery followed by a rough recovery limited him to just those 29 games and clearly slowed his game down. The season before, in 2009-2010, Vinny finished second on the Rangers in scoring behind Marian Gaborik.
The Rangers needed to move on from Prospal for several reasons. Age-wise, he did not fit into their plans to get younger and faster. Secondly, there are very limited available roster spots going into camp this season, so essentially there was no room for him on the squad. Plus, the team as a whole is getting faster while Prospal is gradually getting slower.
Vinny served his purpose while he was here and was a tremendous leader throughout. However, it was time for him and the Rangers to go their separate ways. Best of luck to him in Columbus.
