Rangers Prospects Head to Traverse City

Over the course of this Holiday Weekend and into next week, the annual Prospects Tournament, hosted by the Detroit Red Wings, will be held in Traverse City, Michigan. Accompanied by head coach, John Tortorella, many of the Rangers top prospects are heading out for Michigan today, to prepare for the actual games which begin tomorrow. Among those players are newly drafted forward, Ryan Bourque, who has been opening eyes as of late, Evgeny Grachev, arguably the best Blueshirt Prospect as of now, Mike Del Zotto, last year's first round draft pick who is one of the Rangers superior defensive prospects, and goalie Chad Johnson, who the Rangers picked up this summer.

Below is the full roster that the Rangers will be sending to the tournament:

FORWARDS
63 Daniel Bartek C — Everett (WHL)
60 Ryan Bourque C - USA U-18 (USDP)
57 Chris Chappell LW — Saginaw (OHL)
58 Paul Crowder C — Alaska (NCAA)

67 Luke Pither C — Guelph (OHL)
53 Justin Soryal LW — Hartford (AHL)
55 Luke Walker RW — Portland (WHL)
65 Dale Weise RW - Hartford (AHL)
61 Ethan Werek C - Kingston (OHL)

DEFENSEMEN
47 Mike Berube D — Vancouver (WHL)
43 Michael Del Zotto D - Oshawa (OHL)
48 Tysen Dowzak D — Kelowna (WHL)
51 Mitch Gaulton D - Erie (OHL)
70 Trevor Glass D — Spokane (WHL)
72 Samuel Klassen D — Saskatoon (WHL)
46 Tomas Kundratek D - Medicine Hat (WHL)
52 Daniel Maggio D - Sudbury (OHL)

GOALTENDERS
96 Chad Johnson G - Alaska (NCAA)
94 Scott Stajcer G - Owen Sound (OHL)

Here are some players to watch; Chad Johnson, newly acquired goalie out of the OHL, Sam Klassen, signed by Rangers this summer, Mike Del Zotto, OHL prospect looking to make a legitimate run for a roster spot with the Rangers this season, Ethan Werek, drafted in the second round of this year's draft, Evgeny Grachev, probably the most skilled out of all Ranger prospects, Chris Chappell, newly acquired LW from the OHL, and finally Ryan Bourque who the Rangers drafted in the third round and made a big splash in the U20 tournament this past August.

As far as the schedule goes, the Blueshirts will hit the ice tomorrow, Monday, Wednesday, and depending on where they place, Thursday. The schedule is as follows:

September 6th: Rangers vs Hurricanes 3 pm
September 7th: Rangers vs Thrashers 3 pm
September 9th: Rangers vs Red Wings 7 pm
September 10th: Placement Game TBD

Even though the tournament was televised last year, NHL Network will not be broadcasting from the tourney this year. So basically if you are not there, you are not seeing it. This does not stop us from bringing updates to you, however, as I am sure updates on the tournament will be available throughout the Internet, as well as on the Rangers Official Site, so as soon as that information becomes available to us, I will be sure to have it up on the site a.s.a.p., and also keep tabs on my Twitter, as the results of tournament games will most likely be posted there first, before they actually hit the site.

Out of all the kids in the Rangers system I think I'm most excited about Grachev and Werek. I was really upset to see the Rangers pass on Carter Ashton [and surprised he hung around until 29] in the first round. I really felt that he was what they needed and I love his game. But I was really excited when they selected Werek. I like him as much as I like Ashton, so again, very excited. Artem Anisimov is probably going to make the team this season, so even more excitement!

And when you look at the Rangers youth on defense it probably explains why they didn't resign Morris or Mara [I still would have kept Mara]. I'm guessing they view Gilroy as a sure thing to stay on the team and figure that McDonagh and Sanguinetti may be up and down throughout the season. And that's where McLaren comes in and provides a cushion. I also believe Del Zotto is someone they see as taking another year.

One last thing... On the last page of The Hockey News yearbook they created a list of the 25 players under the age of 25 that they would build a franchise around. At number 25 on the list was our very own Marc Staal. That was good to see because sometimes it seems like The Hockey News has a disdain for the Rangers and they're not very good at hiding it, so they must really like something about Staal haha. I hope to see Staal wearing an A this season and sticking around for a very long time. In my opinion he is the future captain of the Rangers. I would also love to see Torts try to take advantage of Staal's shot, which is something Renney never seemed to pursue.

Ashton was talked about fairly highly going into the draft, and then sort of fell when the draft got closer and closer for whatever reason. Anyway, Werek was a solid ick in the second round, and when we made that pick, I had several people notify me that he is a good player.

Yes, I would go as far as saying that Gilroy is a definite for this season. There is a great story about Gilroy if you follow this link: http://www.nhl.com/ice/news.htm?id=497619&cmpid=rss-rosen. As for DZ, he needs another year of development, just as you said, and it may be the same case for Sangs, so we will see.

I also receive Hockey News in the mail, and I saw that list. I love to see things like that, especially when, like you said, THN has something against the Rangers. Torts will definitely work on Marc's offense in training camp, and will hopefully get him contributing more offensively. He should get an "A" for sure.

McDonagh is in college, not around this season. I expect Gilroy and Potter as 3d pair, backed up by Sauer, Heikennen and Sanguinetti when needed. The longshot exciting option is delZotto forcing to be kept.

Right. I do not see McDonagh making the team this year, he needs more time. Potter wouldn't be a bad choice, but we will see if McLaren beats him out for the spot.
