Redden Remains Out, Heikkinen Recalled

All of the beat writers have now confirmed that Wade Redden will not be able to participate in Saturday's game against the Buffalo Sabres, so the Rangers have recalled Wolf Pack Defenseman Ilkka Heikkinen from Hartford (AHL). However, with Christensen coming in with a $750,000 cap hit and Chad Johnson with a $850,000 hit, General Manager Glen Sather was forced to put forward Brandon Dubinsky on long-term injured reserve to fit all of these players into the lineup and remain below the ceiling. This simply means that Dubinsky's salary will not be counted against the cap until he returns, which Tortorella said is right around the corner.

As for Redden, he did practice with the team today but obviously will not be ready for Saturday's contest in Buffalo, otherwise the recall would not have taken place. It is interesting that the Blueshirts did not go back to Bobby Sanguinetti who played in three games with the team leading up to this point. Nonetheless, Heikkinen will be at practice tomorrow. The Finnish blue-liner has recorded five goals and 11 assists with the Wolf Pack in 24 games played this season.

Heikkinen wasn't to bad of a defender when i saw him playing in the preseason.Let's see what he can do.I wonder what Brashers injury is that he cant play again.maybe we can put him on long-term injured reserve for the rest of his contract

Haha, I wish. Heikkinen was fairly solid in the preseason. He is more of an offensive minded defenseman and has a great slap shot from the point. I mean, he doesn't have anyexperience at the NHL level, but somewhere down the road he can be used on the powerplay.

Injuries obviously aren't something that we should celebrate, but the fact that we are getting previews of our farm system is very enjoyable.

First Finn to play for the team! If only we had more Finnish forwards we wouldn't be in this dump! They can't score anyway, but atleast they work hard!

I watched H play in person; he is a good AHL player but certainly no Leetch and he is no crease clearer. Now Dubinski and Redden go long term IR and Valliquet is scape goated for poor coaching and poor plan. Meanwhile, the only winger with any grit whatsoever stays in Hartford. This is quite a management team we have here. I know! They are angling for the first pick in the draft! Great Move.
