Schneider on Waivers, Rangers Interested?

Multiple sources on twitter are reporting that the Vancouver Canucks have placed veteran defenseman Mathieu Schneider on waivers. Schneider, 40, has been filling the role of seventh defenseman on most of the teams he has played for over the past few years. In seventeen games played with the Canucks this season, the New York native has recorded two goals and three assists for 5 points.

Recently, Coach John Tortorella has hinted at the fact that he is looking to add a seventh defenseman to the club, but he has not shown much patients with youngsters. With that, GM Glen Sather's best bet would be to go with a veteran here. Mathieu Schneider definitely fits that description and can still play. However, there is a catch. Schneider has a cap hit of around $2.75 million, while the Rangers only have about $900,000 in cap room. The only way to make this work would be to dump forwards Aaron Voros and Erik Christensen, a move we have been waiting on for quite a while now.

Personally, I would like to see a veteran like Schneider brought to New York, not only for on-ice purposes, but for the teaching he could provide in the locker room to the younger players such as Matt Gilroy, Michael Del Zotto, and even Marc Staal. Schneider has 24 hours until he clears waivers, but until then, the Rangers could possibly have a shot at claiming him. We will see if Sather is willing to make room by parting ways with Voros and Christensen, two players that are becoming healthy scratches on a nightly basis.

They weren't interested in Schneider when he was available in the off season.
He's lost "more than a step" - precisely why the Canucks have waived him.

I'm all for getting an NHL experienced d-man, but not one that's going to be a clear liability on the ice.

Schneider is not the guy.

To be honest, I have not seen him play all that much this season. However, in previous years he has looked decent, nothing special, but good enough to be a seventh defenseman. I doubt Slats makes a move for him anyway, but I just thought I speculate a bit.

look i hate voros and he needs to go, but 2.75 mil on a 40 yr old is alot. i think it would be great to have a solid veteran d on the team because he will prob make smarter plays than rosival but i don't see it happening

The price is high, but I would think after a year of low-playing time and accepting a role of seventh defenseman, Schneider would not be demanding that high of a price anymore.

We will see, but like you said, this probably won't go anywhere from a Rangers standpoint.

We need to get younger and tougher which are descriptions that don't fit Schneider. The NYR need to bring up Sauer who plays the style that the team needs, not the one Tortorella likes. I see that he has already made his next air-head decision by declining to bring up help from Hartford. Tortorella is more of a disappointment, I think, than this collection he calls his team. I confess that I thought removing Renney and installing Tortorella was a good move. I now confess my error, which was a big one. They will be lucky to beat a team of Flyer mothers with this group.

I think we all felt Tortorella was the answer and that he would top what Tom Renney accomplished. Unfortunately, that has not been the case. I think they should have made a call-up from Hartford, and after they lose one game, they most likely will because then Torts will panic. Same thing over and over again.
